that once a month, my father left very early in the morning to organize the installation of the windows of his shoe store. He had to be alone, in peace, for this work which requires inspiration and experience. As a shopkeeper, he had the obligation to renew his windows regularly, in order to show customers the new models. He had often explained to me that simply changing the position of a product could trigger a purchase. I listened wisely to his comments, and even today, I like to organize my miniature windows, in the store but also at home. My visits to museums have greatly enriched me in this area.

In France in particular, museum scenography has reached new heights.

It allows works to be highlighted by comparing them with each other.

The Solido 100 series miniatures are easier to showcase in a display case. For two reasons. They have always been packaged in individual cases and they are of uniform size. The enthusiast who varies the colors can line them up on their case, side by side. This arrangement allows the color nuances to be highlighted. The result is always spectacular. This week we have a Peugeot 403 convertible, a Simca Océane and two Aston Martin DB5s, all with their individual cases.

There are two main periods in the design of these individual cases. The first are made of good quality decorated cardboard, resistant to time. In the mid-sixties, display boxes appear. In the middle of production, and during a transition period, two models, the Mustang and the Toronado will receive a display box. A third, the Lamborghini Miura, like the one offered this week, will receive a flat box simulating the roadway. The latter will be quickly abandoned, for practical reasons, in favor of a display box.

The oldest references still in the catalog during this transition in the mid-sixties, the Ford GT40, the Maserati Mistral, but also the Ford Mustang will be distributed in this new type of display box, to the great delight of Solido fans who will find material there to develop subtle variations. A Chaparral 2D or an Alfa Romeo GTZ highway police are much harder to find with this type of display box than with a cardboard box.

The advantage of transparent boxes is that they can be stacked to create “walls” at the back of the window. They lend themselves easily to this. This recreates the world of toy stores in the seventies, where shopkeepers took advantage of their good quality and did not hesitate to design stacks with the most beautiful effect. I remember that the combination of the bright colors of the models with the bright colors of the boxes was a delight for the eyes. This week we have two models packaged with this type of box: a Mercedes C111 and an Alfa Romeo 33TT12.

vive la VW 1200 !

Thirty years ago, many miniature enthusiasts organized their collections by theme: coaches, taxis, fire engines, etc. or by car manufacturer brand. At the Rétromobile show in 1986, I was the first to classify my miniatures in my display cases by car manufacturer, before being followed by my colleagues in the following years. During my 23 years at this show, I was able to measure the collectors’ favorite brands. Volkswagen, with its VW 1200, was obviously one of them. I thought about this when I saw the thumbnails of the models scheduled this week.

This brand has experienced extraordinary growth all over the world. This is obviously felt in the miniature reproductions. Which country has not imported this VW1200? In fact, leading to a local miniature reproduction! I have a collection of Argentine, Iranian, Australian, Japanese, Mexican, Finnish, Indian, Dutch miniature Volkswagens, and so on. This week we have a Volkswagen 1200 ’65 with US bumpers made in Israel at Gamda. The miniature was primarily intended for the American market. The “flower power” livery takes us back to a period marked by change. This very successful variation is difficult to obtain. It is true that this car is symbolic of this period. The idea of desacralizing the automobile by using a car of old design (pre-war) and decorating it with flowers lends itself wonderfully to the Volkswagen.

My favorite is this promotional Fiat 126 from Mebetoys.

I have always appreciated models that are off the beaten track. This little Mebetoys is one of them.

In fact, it is not the miniature that interests me but its promotional packaging for the Fiat network.

Note that there is also an Autobianchi A112 at Mebetoys made in a promotional box and in a special color

It is of course the box that makes all the difference. I like to place this type of unusual product in the center of the window, and build around it, with more models, a scenography that highlights the whole thing. Try it and you will see! I guarantee the result.
