…from the blog “Mrs Robinson’s Ford”. The inspiration came from a sentence from “the graduate”. Mrs Robinson revealed to the young hero that her daughter had been conceived in a Ford. The idea then came to me to look for the type of Ford it could be. All I had to do was remember the ages of the protagonists and the age of the filming of the movie, 1967.

Seeing the superb red Mebetoys Alfa Rome Duetto on the program this week, I thought about it again. This car was “the” car in the film. It made such a lasting impression that it was a real success on the other side of the Atlantic, to the point of publishing a special “graduate” series. For this unique convertible, California seems a natural fit. The idea of choosing an Italian car is not insignificant. It is the symbol of “la dolce Vita”.

Two other interesting Mebetoys are on the menu.

They sport the same metallic dress.

These are two “rally” versions of the elegant Lancia Fulvia. Until the authorization of special series homologation, at the end of the sixties, beginning of the seventies, rally events were made up of vehicles from the series. It was the engine displacement that made it possible to establish groups. Certain cars, due to their original design, had predispositions to shine on the roads. The Lancia Fulvia is one of these cars.

It will distinguish itself in rallying for almost ten years, even winning the Monte-Carlo rally in 1972 in the face of the Alpine Renault and other successful cars of the time. The numerous victories of the Fulvia HF in rallying spread over almost ten years will have an impact on its commercial success. T

hey will make Lancia’s management, not very interested at the beginning of the adventure, understand the merits of this commitment which will continue with the famous Stratos and the successes that we know.

Mebetoys had the Lancia Fulvia coupe in its catalog since the beginning of its adventure, so it was easy for it to offer a “rally” version by adding the appropriate decoration.

It did it very well.

Over ten years of production, it declined the four main decorations that the Fulvia HF had known in rallying. This week we have those located in the middle of the adventure. The one with a black hood in the Lancia Italia colors as it won the Monte-Carlo 1972, and the one in the colors of Marlboro cigarettes from 1973.

Philip Morris will become the sponsor of the team and we will find his colors on the first Stratos of 1973. These are two very interesting miniatures for those who are passionate about Italian or rally cars.

Although this Fulvia was never produced as a convertible in series, a barquette version, intended for competition called “barchetta FM” existed and took part in the 1969 Targa Florio. In his early years, Michel Sordet produced a version that he marketed in small series based on this Mebetoys, proving that the base was very good.

convertibles in the snow!

One of the facets of my job is to project myself into the future.

I am about three to four months ahead in programming upcoming models.

I have a little smile when I program convertibles during the summer for the month of December.

Toys stimulate the imagination. I think of my father who ordered his shoes for the following summer in the middle of winter. So I thought of him when I saw these dashing convertibles, with open hoods, from Corgi Toys programmed for the beginning of winter.

It is certainly not the gloomy weather that prevents our friends from across the Channel from driving in the middle of winter in an open convertible. A hat, mittens, an anorak and there they are on the small roads of Kent ready to face the rigors of winter.

You will think of them when you see the beautiful Corgi Toys convertibles this week. Corgi Toys has offered convertibles from the start of its adventure. It even dedicated a series to this type of body (300 series). We have an elegant Triumph TR2, in a beautiful harmony of cream color with red seats. The car is superb. This fragile color takes on its full dimension in this state of preservation. Corgi Toys was not afraid to cross swords with Dinky Toys who already had a beautiful series of convertibles in its catalog.

The MG “A”, also offered, is faithfully reproduced. It is in my opinion the most beautiful reproduction of this car. Observe it and compare it with the Triumph described above. Corgi Toys used the same two colors, only the distribution has changed.

With the Lotus Elan we take a little leap in time. Good choice by Corgi Toys who anticipated the future of Colin Chapman’s brand.

From the outset, the Swansea firm had also included a Lotus XI barquette from the beginning of the Hethel brand’s history in its catalogue. We also have it, in a beautiful silver livery. As for Dinky Toys, it took a while to become interested in this major brand and offered the Europa model at the end of the sixties.

The last two offered are supercharged American cars from the late sixties. Camaro and Firebird are names that still delight fans of big American cars today.

In his 1993 film “Intimate Diary”, Nanni Moretti strolls on his Vespa in the middle of summer in the sunny and deserted streets of Rome. The scooter is a pretext to make us discover the city, its architecture, its beauty, its inhabitants. If in “La Dolce Vita” Marcello Mastroianni, who played a character navigating in the sphere of the bourgeoisie had a Triumph convertible to crisscross the streets of Rome, Nanni Moretti uses a Vespa, like a large part of the population. It is also this scooter, symbolizing everyday life and a certain sweetness of life for many Italians, which appears on the poster of the film.

Later, in 2023 for his film “Vers un avenir radieux”, a nod to “diary”, he will use an electric scooter, a modern means of transport, using the same graphics. In 1953, in “Roman Holiday” by William Wyler, it is also a Vespa that shares the star of the film with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.

You have understood that the scooter is attached to the Roman landscape like the double-decker bus to that of London and the traffic jams in Paris.

This week we have an original “generic” scooter manufactured by Solido. It is dismountable and transformable. We can clearly recognize the Solido DNA. It is a piece full of charm. Solido has also reproduced a Terrot, a French scooter. It is another concept. It is similar but cannot be dismantled. The expansion of the scooter, whose purchase price is low and whose economical use symbolizes post-war Italy. A large part of the population did not have access to automobiles.

This week we have some great examples of scooter-derived machines for commercial use. The Piaggio equipped with a dumper was a great commercial success at the time. It was Mercury who was behind its reproduction. Here we think of Fellini and “La Strada”: Antony Quinn, a traveling showman, uses a similar machine topped with a tarpaulin bearing his artist name “Zampano” to transport his equipment and his partner.

The Lambretta from Vilmer equipped with a side plate also belongs to this category of small economical machines. We owe it to Vilmer, a Danish manufacturer. It is an uncommon part.

Porsche 550 spider Solido-Tekno

Le Mans 1954. The rain has not stopped falling all night. This is the atmosphere that Géo Ham, the famous illustrator, chose to immortalize the victory of the Ferrari 375 Plus and the small DB with the performance index. Both are equipped with Marchal headlights, which are the origin of this advertising order.

Seeing the power of the projectors piercing the raging elements, we say to ourselves that with such headlights, nothing bad can happen to you. As a simple spectator of the poster, I remain in awe of the drivers mastering these racing cars in the torrential rain. Real heroes.

When facing the hostile elements, did they regret driving this type of car? Do they think with envy of those who started in a closed car?

However, many drivers have often expressed their pleasure in driving in a barquette with their “head in the wind” despite the risk of bad weather.

This week, take a ride in the Porsche 550 spider from Solido-Tekno. In its improbable green finish, it was made in cooperation with Tekno, who assembled this model in Denmark for a short period. There are three colors, borrowed from the Tekno range of course.

my favorite single-seaters:

By choice, before the start, the driver does not have one in a single-seater. In case of bad weather, he is not protected. We think of the drivers before the Second World War who sometimes wore only a simple head covering. In some period photos, we see them wearing clothes more suited to these harsh weather conditions. In the United States, however, the races of the two different championships (Nascar, Indy) are canceled or postponed in case of bad weather. We do not race in the rain. The two Harvey Aluminum offered this week were therefore unable to experience these extreme racing conditions.

We have for sale a rare Dalia. Like the Tekno described above, it is the result of a trade agreement, this time between Solido and Dalia. This made it possible to circumvent certain customs barriers established in order to favor work in the country where they were sold. This is quite judicious. Look at the two models for sale. The original, French, and the Spanish. I will of course pass over the difference in color. It is the small concave steel rims that give the Spanish model all its flavor and singularity.

We also have a series of three Lola V8 Climax from Solido. These single-seaters designed by Eric Broadley were not successful on the circuits, but they allowed John Surtees, thanks to a few runner-up finishes in 1962, to get noticed by Ferrari, who hired him the following year. We have a metallic blue, a chrome version and a beautiful and less common turquoise color. Their low prices are an invitation to acquire them.
