I remember...

…July 20, 1969. Everyone of my generation knows this date. Even today, on full moon days, when it is big and round, I look at the sky and remember the day Neil Armstrong set foot there. The most impressive thing, for the child I was in 1969, was the return trip. How could I imagine it when from this impressive rocket attached to the Saturn V launcher, there was only one small element left, the module, which had to make the reverse journey, bringing its passengers back to earth. It is a feat that still amazes me today. This conquest of Apollo 11 was celebrated by Dinky Toys.

On July 24, the Columbia capsule was recovered at sea.

Four Sea King helicopters participated in the operation. The astronauts were airlifted and taken to the aircraft carrier “USS Hornet”. It is the latter which is immortalized by the designer of the diorama of the Dinky Toys box.

And with what talent. It’s superb, the diorama takes us back to this historic day: everything went well, the astronauts returned safe and sound. The Dinky Toys design office even reproduced the Columbia capsule. It opens and the three astronauts are there, huddled together.

We can imagine what an adventure ending this splashdown at nearly 2260 km/h was. The Dinky Toys Sea King is equipped with an electric winch allowing children to reproduce in the family bathtub the scene they saw on television.

With this in mind, we have also programmed two beautiful ambulances almost contemporary with the scene, also produced by Dinky Toys, a Cadillac and a Pontiac just in case…

With more imagination, and some spirit of adventure, you can revisit the scene of the Columbia capsule landing by introducing the “Batboat”, with Batman and his faithful lieutenant, also on the poster of the week. The Dinky Toys “sea king” box set is superb, it deserves a place of choice in your windows. I also see a small victory for Liverpool over Swansea and Corgi Toys. At that time Corgi Toys was beginning its reorientation. The fact that the Swansea firm did not know how to seize the opportunity of the conquest of space, to offer an article related to it is questionable. Ten years ago this firm was reactive and combative. Its “Lunar bug” coming out of the imagination of the design office some time later will not convince anyone and will be a fiasco.

By keeping its models in the catalogue for a long time, Dinky Toys had time to decline colour variants, to our great pleasure. Corgi Toys, more responsive and not wanting to bore its customers, did not offer all these variants.

None of its trucks, for example, have 10 to 15 colour combinations as is the case for the Leyland Comet, the Bedford “O”, the Commer tow trucks, the Guy or the Foden at Dinky Toys.

This week we have a nice selection of color variations. The price drop, particularly noticeable on these products, seems to me to be a great asset.

The rarest model in the weekly lineup is undoubtedly the color variation of the Bedford “O” dumpster: orange/gray/and apple green…if you like this model, like me, have fun collecting the wheel variations (cream or green zamac, or red plastic) to push the limits even further. It’s a pretty exciting aspect of the collection.

Vous pouvez aussi décliner les variantes d’harmonie de couleurs des camions plus « modernes »: AEC Hoynor et Ford D800. Ils ont l’avantage d’être encore à des prix modiques, et leur déclinaison est vrai un régal pour les yeux. Je puis vous assurer qu’il y a de belles découvertes à faire. Il y a très longtemps que j’apprécie ces camions.

This is the distance between the Earth and the Moon. This is also the mileage that Fiat could have displayed in advertisements to promote its legendary robust 682 truck range.

We have a nice series of Fiat Mercury this week. We are still talking about the iconic car carrier version. It was a success that allowed the “truck/utility” theme to enter miniature collections in the early sixties, which until then had been mostly confined to reproductions of automobiles. This is perhaps the most beautiful car carrier ever made as a toy. The version offered is late, equipped with glazing.

We also have two superb tipper versions. This “tipper” version, very simple, very successful, has allowed the Turin firm to demonstrate, once again, an unrivaled know-how in the use of colors and a taste for harmony.

This week the color green dominates: we have a green and gray, sober and realistic and an improbable blue and green, of the most beautiful effect in the window. Make your choice.

My favorite is this beautiful set of miniature planes

Before going to the moon, man had to master the skies. This was no easy feat. The story of the conquest of the sky is much more exciting than that of the history of the automobile. The latter has also greatly benefited, and in many areas, from the progress made in aviation. My favorite of the week is this beautiful set of miniature airplanes offered for sale.

These aircraft have a special place in the catalogues of toy manufacturers. Corgi Toys has almost ignored them. The only exception was the reproduction of the Concorde. The problem with model aircraft from toy manufacturers is their scale of reproduction, which is different from that of cars and other heavy goods vehicles in their range.

You imagine a Caravelle reproduced at 1/43! Not easy for a toy manufacturer, not easy later when the retailer puts them on sale to make the two ranges coexist, with such different scales.

Once again, Solido has distinguished itself. Like its competitors, it has reproduced its planes at scales ranging from 1/150 to 1/300. The range, mainly consisting of fighter planes and experimental planes, is interesting. But it is the title of this collection that is judicious: “model planes”. Solido invites its young buyers to line them up on a shelf. Their function is clear, they are not “toys” but “models”. It is with these that I started collecting planes. Logically. Later, Solido will even create a range of plastic “models” to assemble, in the same logic.
