I remember...

…the shop windows of the toy stores I frequented as a child in my hometown.

Every collector remembers the childlike wonder they felt gazing at these shop windows filled with treasures. These are little things we keep in our memories, sometimes modifying them, often embellishing them. Doubts can creep in. Time has taken its toll. However, I remember very well certain models that made a lasting impression on me, like the arrival in the window of the “Au Petit Bazar” shop on Rue de la Corne de Cerf, just a stone’s throw from my parents’ shop in Compiègne, of the Dinky Toys “Highway” set.

I even had the opportunity to write a blog post about it.

I also remember very well the box for the Berliet double-cab truck with a large ladder that sat proudly in a brass side display case. The design on the lid captivated me.

Recently, I had the unexpected opportunity to acquire a Dinky Toys catalog, 1963 edition, bearing the company’s stamp. Needless to say, this catalog is particularly dear to me.

Having become a collector in the mid-seventies, I looked at those shop windows with a different perspective. I had grown up; I had lost the childlike innocence that makes everything seem wonderful in a toy shop window. My memories would now be tied to other products, those intended for collectors.

Around that same time, there was a surge in the production of new scale models specifically for collectors. These were no longer just toys, and their price tag made it clear to the buyer that they were dealing with a product for adults. That’s how I discovered these Tekno models made in the Netherlands.
They were sold at very high prices. The Dutch buyers understood perfectly well that these beautiful vehicles of Danish origin could now appeal to a different clientele.

Now produced in limited series, decorated in the colors of existing transport companies, Tekno Holland had taken advantage of the rise of the “collectible” phenomenon to find its niche. And it did so brilliantly. The head of the Danish firm would never have thought that this type of product, intended solely for a collector’s clientele, could be viable.

Even Mr. de Vazeilles of Solido hadn’t imagined it. Only Mr. Greilsamer, with his Modelisme and then Eligor, had understood it; it must be said that he was at the heart of the demand with his magazine and his shop on Boulevard Sébastopol.

I thought of this when I saw the three beautiful examples directly derived from Danish designs but manufactured in the Netherlands. The Ford D800 tractor-trailer refrigerated van is splendid and original.

The Danish version (see the blog post “Tekno freezer D800 posthumous”) is extremely rare.

The one in my collection came from the factory display case. I’m not sure if it was ever sold commercially. Nowadays, many copies are circulating, made from the Dutch version.

This last one on offer is charming with its Frisko Is advertising and bright color.

It truly deserves your attention, especially since the prices are quite low.

The two Scania 110 rigid trucks equipped with a tarpaulin-covered sideboard and a trailer are also very well done. They are easily as attractive as the Danish versions, and the De Rijke version is, let’s face it, quite rare.

These vehicles, overlooked by enthusiasts, truly deserve a restoration. They have a unique history and are just as well-finished as their Danish counterparts. Furthermore, the liveries are original and unique.

good tone

It’s sometimes fashionable to criticize what you once loved.

Dinky Toys, for example. Fashions come and go, but I remain attached to this brand and all the toys produced in the immediate post-war period. The sensory pleasure is still there. I still enjoy handling them, hoping to find new shades of color or variations in the rim colors.

When I see models from this period in the weekly lineup, I select them to share this passion. With the secret hope that it will also interest others, who will in turn get caught up in the game of discovering variations.

Prices have dropped significantly. Some Dinky Toys collectors seem worried about this, but I encourage them, on the contrary, to take advantage of this favorable situation to improve or expand their collections.

This week we have a few examples that deserve your attention. Liverpool masterfully used certain colors.

Take the burgundy color, for instance. The chosen tone, its lasting quality over time, never altered, always brilliant, make the models available in this shade a success.
Dinky Toys GB - Buick Viceroy 39D

This week we have three very different vehicles, produced over several years, that all share this color.

While the Buick Viceroy dates from the immediate post-war period, the Austin truck is from the early 1950s. This charming little truck is quite interesting. It has burgundy rims. It’s a “30 S,” sold in sets of six. Later, its color would lighten, the rims would be painted red, and it would receive the reference number 413.

The same is true for the Austin Devon, which received two different chassis. The first, with a small engraving, was only available in sets of six. This is the case with the example offered here. It’s a detail worth appreciating.

The color scheme is also different from that produced later. (See Swinging London blog 2).

Austin Devon deux nuances de bordeaux

The color gray was widely used in Liverpool.

This shade is classic. It varies considerably depending on the varnish used.

This week we have the 30E tow truck and the British Salmon 36F on the program.

These are true classics. But finding them in the condition they are offered in is far from easy. Go and see your examples in the display cases…with time, the collector becomes more discerning. The appeal of a classic model lies in its state of preservation. It takes time to understand that.

Much rarer, we have three beautiful trucks equipped with a sheet metal tarpaulin: a superb and impressive 25 S Leyland Terrier, derived from the military model and presented here in a civilian version, and two 25 B trucks.

These are interesting because of their unusual color combination. The harmony of the green truck and caramel-colored tarpaulin is splendid and rare.

I’ve saved the rarest for last.

The Austin Seven 35 A is rare in this dark blue finish. This very particular shade, also seen on the Thunderbolt, the Chrysler Royal, the Blaw Know heavy tractor, etc., wasn’t kept in Liverpool for very long. This is the first time I’ve had this color of Austin Seven for sale!

The three models I’m going to present all share the common thread of having been landmarks when I opened my shop in 1984. They were the stuff of dreams for even the most modest collectors.

For many of them, they were financially out of reach. How things have changed! Yet the fact remains: they are still as beautiful, still as rare, and the emotion they evoke is undiminished. The problem is that some new collectors don’t know how to appreciate them. They take the easy way out, looking for models they can find more readily. Some collectors have lost the taste for effort and perseverance. Now, if you don’t quickly find the coveted miniature, you move on to something else.

Yet how can one remain unmoved by this Magirus bus from Märklin, especially in such pristine condition…like new, without any signs of metal fatigue? The toy has managed to survive the horrors of the Second World War.

As for the modest price of this Peugeot 201 convertible, it seems to me like an offer extended to new enthusiasts.

This model rarely comes up for sale, especially in this color and in this condition. It’s being sold at the price of an average Mebetoys model. This puzzles me, because the Mebetoys will come up for sale many times, while this AR model only appears every three or four years… collectors, take note!

The last model is even rarer. It’s a model steeped in history: the “Zebra” by Desormeaux. It can be considered one of the first models intended solely for collectors and produced in small series.

This was in the early 1960s. Acquiring one required connections and a bit of money. It’s a piece of history.

If there’s one vintage watch to have in your collection, it’s this one! During my career, I don’t think I’ve ever had more than two for sale…

My favorite is this superb GMC tow truck from Ideal

My absolute favorite is this superb 1/43 scale GMC tow truck from Ideal.

This model was intended for the American market.

It shares the same chassis as other trucks from the brand equipped with an electric mechanism. While Ideal cars built on the same principle are easy to find, the trucks are much rarer and more impressive.

I appreciate the numerous chrome-plated plastic parts that adorn the miniature. It’s as flashy as an American truck!

The chosen color is a perfect match for this model, and the bull bar in front of the radiator immerses us in the American road scene of the mid-sixties. A superb and rare product.
