I remember...
…as a child, I used to see Daf Frontstuur trucks in the streets of Compiègne. These trucks were quite rare in France. I believe they were well-suited for public works, equipped with a concrete mixer or a tipper body.
Their distinctive cab profile, with its large grille framed by chamfered edges, certainly caught my eye. I later learned, as with agricultural equipment, that a brand’s local success was due to the presence of an active dealer, attentive to their customers.
Customers showed their trust by purchasing these unusual trucks, knowing they could rely on a trustworthy person for after-sales service. Having become a collector, I eagerly began gathering these trucks that I had seen as a child.
The French importer was based for a long time in Survilliers, near Senlis. From the A4 motorway, one could see an impressive building emblazoned with the DAF logo. Lion Car, a Dutch manufacturer closely associated with DAF, produced several semi-trailers in DAF France livery.
This week we have two DAF Frontstuur models, including a highly original chassis cab.
modèle en vente cette semaine : Lion Car – DAF Frontstuur chassis
Truck manufacturers often supplied independent coachbuilders with bare “cab chassis.” The customer chose the coachbuilder based on its intended use (refrigerated body, tipper, multi-lift, etc.).
To my knowledge, Lion Car is the only model car manufacturer to have produced such a “factory-ready” version.
The recipient of the model could thus admire the robust chassis of the truck they had just ordered in full scale.
We have forgotten the impact this type of gift must have had on decision-makers. The model is refined and very well made.
Lion Car only produced this version with its first cab, equipped with a bar grille. It’s likely that this creation was originally requested by DAF for promotional use.
This forced Lion Car to pay close attention to the chassis’s construction.
The second version, featuring a more modern grille with chamfered edges, is also available.

Later, a third grille design was produced. It is distinguished by the addition of the Daf lettering in the center. This version is equipped with a high-quality, folded and painted sheet metal canvas top.
I appreciate the finish of this top and the quality of the engraving on the side panels. A few transport companies had already approached Lion Car at the time to produce advertising versions.
The two models offered are originals made in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In the 1980s, Lion Car reissued these models. The rims are different, and most notably, the inner wheel of the dual rear axle is made of gray plastic, not painted zamac. This is noticeable when the vehicle is turned over. The rarity and value are not the same. I would also add, the appeal. The prices are very reasonable. This is a significant advantage.

Let’s stay in the Netherlands with these Tekno models, also offered this week. A Dutch entrepreneur bought the name and tooling from Denmark, seeing in these high-quality truck and bus molds the opportunity to compete with Lion Car in the advertising model market at a lower cost, before later creating new cabs. Success followed.
I’m surprised that these vehicles, worthy successors to the Danish models, haven’t won over enthusiasts today. It’s true that the sheer number of advertisements produced can be daunting. These models were expensive in 1974, when they first appeared on the market.
The Scania CR76 bus was quickly discontinued. It rarely comes up for sale, and the Mercedes 0303 in the Oadreizen livery is splendid. I appreciate the harmonious colors and the quality of the decoration. Furthermore, this company operated on the A1 motorway in northern France, and like a number of semi-trailers produced by Tekno Holland, their colors and names are familiar to me.
They form a common thread in my collection.

As with Lion Cars, low prices are a major advantage.
We have a beautiful Danish-made Volvo F89 in the colors of the legendary Swedish transport company ASG. This truck perfectly illustrates the points made earlier. It would later reappear in the Netherlands after the company’s acquisition.

a weakness for this scale
1/43 scale is the most represented in my display cases. I discovered 1/60 scale 40 years ago with Siku plastic models.
Since then, I’ve had a soft spot for this scale, which has many advantages.
It falls between 1/43 and 1/87.
This week we have some beautiful examples from Siku, including a rare set consisting of an Opel Kapitan and a caravan. First of all, I appreciate the colors, graphics, and design of the individual packaging. These elements are consistent across all products contemporary with the model and create a cohesive look. Siku also produced a few trailer sets. These are all difficult to find today because collectors neglected them at the time in favor of individual models.

In the early 1970s, these Siku diecast models began to gain popularity in France. The French importer was very active, and I remember them being available in high-quality toy stores. For me, they are associated with that image. I remember that I had stopped playing with miniatures when I saw them in a shop (1973) and regretted not having discovered them sooner: I envied the children who went to play with them!
When I had the opportunity to acquire them professionally, I discovered a world full of charm. I appreciate the harmony that emanates from the collection…and I am delighted to know that I will soon be able to exhibit these diecast models as well, which are currently carefully stored in boxes.
Also on the agenda are two plastic models. The late-model Opel Blitz with canvas top is difficult to find. The Ford Cologne ambulance truck is a perfect example of Siku’s mastery and fine craftsmanship.

Two points to note: the reproduction of the transmission on this off-road truck and the ingenious retractable staircase system with its sliding mechanism inside the van.
How could you resist opening the rear door to install it?
Two other 1/60 scale models are on the program this week, proving that this scale has been a great success across all continents. The first is a splendid GMC brewery truck from Hubley.
The cab and the bed leave no doubt as to the vehicle’s country of origin: the United States. To be precise, this model was initially designed in Canada by Real Type before the Lancaster-based company acquired the tooling. As with Siku, I fell under the spell of these products a long time ago.
They are difficult to find in good condition, and some versions are rare, such as this Canadian-made version of the GMC brewery truck in Coca-Cola livery.

The latest model is even rarer! It comes from Brazil and reproduces a car that was largely forgotten by 1/43 scale model manufacturers…the station wagon version of the DKW 3/6.
This German brand seems to have enjoyed some success in Brazil, and it’s only natural that Roly Toys, a Brazilian company, offered a lovely reproduction of this charming, rounded car.
This week we have the Bomberos (fire engine) version…boxed. This, of course, adds to the enjoyment of owning it.

Allentown
Model cars are often linked to travel. Seeing a particular model brings back a memory.
That’s the case with the three tanker trucks offered this week. I bought these three pieces in the United States at the Allentown swap meet. They have one thing in common: they are all tanker trucks, and all three are connected to the American market.
The first one, the oldest, is also the rarest. I’ve long appreciated “slush” models, or vehicles injected or molded in lead, reproduced at scales ranging from 1/80 to 1/40.
First, there’s the pleasure of searching and discovering. By venturing into this collection, the enthusiast can discover treasures that their experience will allow them to appreciate. Every year I manage to unearth a few new examples. I know my quest is endless, but after several decades of searching, I savor certain acquisitions.
The Tip Top Toys truck was one of them. This is the second one I’ve come across. This company is unique and holds a special place in the world of slush trucks. Do you have one in your collection? First, this company only produced original designs…no copies or “heavily inspired” models like you find with most other manufacturers. Second, I appreciate the “gasoline” engraving on the sides of the tank.
modèle en vente cette semaine : Tip Top – Camion citerne Gasoline
Indeed, the second model, a “simple” 25D tanker truck, bears no markings on its sides. That’s what makes it interesting.
This version, without the “petrol” markings seen in Europe, was produced at the request of the American importer, Hudson Dobson, because in the United States, the term “gasoline” was used to refer to gasoline!
modèle en vente cette semaine : Dinky Toys GB – Camion Type 2 citerne (USA) 25D
The third model on the program is a superb Foden Mk 2 Mobilgas. This version, which was distributed worldwide, was initially created to satisfy the American market. It’s an aesthetic triumph. This particular model is difficult to find, and I remember how much trouble it gave me 40 years ago!
The model offered has a Hudson Dobson label, proving that it’s an import version. A real bonus.

My favorite color scheme on the program this week
Blue-grey isn’t exactly a vibrant color at first glance.
Yet, the shade used by Tekno is superb and perfectly suited to these two planned models, the Ford Taunus 12M and the Renault 4CV. What’s more, they’re rare! The Taunus seldom comes in a single color.

The same is true of the Opel Rekord 1958 from Tekno, which shares its elegant blue-metallic livery with the Porsche 356.

I appreciate the color sets at Mebetoys. This week, silver is the color of choice with a Fiat 500, a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, and an Innocenti Mini.

We also have metallic green with a beautiful Fiat 124 S taxi and a Lancia Fulvia coupé.
While some color combinations may seem a bit far-fetched, we’re talking about toys, and anything is possible. I encourage Mebetoys enthusiasts to create sets based on a specific color.
Many of the miniatures are affordable. This is the case for those scheduled for release this week.
