I remember...
…that the first retailer to stock Brazilian Minimac miniature trucks in France was the friendly Michel Cazenave.
He ran the Proto shop in Issy-les-Moulineaux.
Cleverly, he had found a way to import these Brazilian-made models into France.
This was in the early 1980s. These splendid semi-trailer trucks with their colorful decorations were a real find. I remember that many enthusiasts saw these Brazilian models as copies of Tekno models.
Yet the only link between the two manufacturers, the Brazilian Minimac and the Danish Tekno, was that they had both reproduced the same Scania tractor. The confusion surely stemmed from the fact that, around the same time, another batch of miniatures from the Colombian brand Chico Toys also appeared in Europe. The Chico Toys Volvos and Mercedes were made using tooling purchased from another Danish manufacturer, Vilmer, a competitor of Tekno.
These circumstances may have caused some confusion. The Minimac semi-trailer trucks are quite impressive. They faithfully reproduce rigs designed for the rugged roads that crisscross the vast country of Brazil. One even wonders if the Scania tractor, which looks small, will be able to reach its destination safely with such a trailer.
Minimac vehicles are actually derived from those produced in the early 1960s by Gué, also in Brazil. I particularly appreciate the beautiful and expressive decorations applied to the tankers and box trailers.

Dairies are prominently featured, as is Atlanta soda on the truck. Vans and box trailers are harder to come by. Michel Cazenave only offered semi-tanker trucks and flatbed semi-trailers for sale.
I appreciate the trailers equipped with three axles and especially the imposing bumper mounted on the rear of the tankers. We don’t have this type of accessory in Europe.

This week you’ll have the opportunity to verify these statements, as we also have three splendid Scania trucks from Tekno.
The tanker semi-trailer seems small compared to the Brazilian model. Both the Minimac and Tekno tanker semi-trailers share a beautiful color scheme. This week we have three less common advertisements. My favorite is the Uno.X.
Firstly, because it’s a model I had trouble finding.
Secondly, and on a more personal note, I like to fill up my rental car at gas stations displaying the same logos I see in my shop windows, logos associated with a particular country.
So, in Gothenburg, I very often filled up at Uno-X…Koppartran. The legendary Swedish brand didn’t even exist in the 80s! This is a chance to see how the advertising logo has evolved over time.

I’ve never come across an Ora station. It’s a shame because the color scheme is superb. Like Koppartrans, this brand must have already disappeared.
The inclusion of the Ora-branded cardboard box is a real bonus.

Finally, the third model may seem unremarkable, yet it’s much rarer than it appears.
I encourage you to reread the blog post “A Pleasant Surprise.”
This version was, at least initially, distributed by Scania. I acquired a few examples from Scania France. It’s possible that the surplus was distributed through other retailers, as was often the case. One thing is certain: the color scheme, with its two shades of blue, is superb.

successful harmonies
Let’s stay with blue and successful color combinations.
This is certainly the case with this JRD Citroën 2CV ’61 Air France van. In my eyes, it’s the most beautiful of the series, and I’m reminded of the page titled “French Vans” (in French in the original text) from the book by Cecil Gibson and CBC, published in English as “Model Commercial Vehicles” in 1972. It dominated the color plate, and seeing the photo, I envied that English collector for owning such a vehicle, until we finally tracked it down.
The version offered here, equipped with the new “61” type hood, is the most difficult to find. Note that there are two different shades of blue, one of which leans towards lavender.

While less flashy, the EDF version, offered here with its original hood, encapsulates an era when all vehicles used for public service were painted gray.
The vibrant touch of the large yellow diamonds and the EDF lettering, along with the small folding ladder, are two details that give this toy its unique character. A significant advantage is that the model offered is in mint condition.
The decals on the sides are fragile.

Let’s stay with JRD and look at this majestic Citroën 1200Kgs “Esso” van, approximately 1/42 scale.
This classic model is always a favorite, and it’s hard to find in this condition. I particularly appreciate the effect of the tricolor waves—blue, white, and red—on the sides of the van.
This model is much rarer than the police version.
The three JRD models for sale have a real advantage: each comes with its own individual case, which is even harder to find than the model itself. The case for the 1200gs is rarely available.

a legendary model
Seeing the Tootsietoys Ford Model T brings to mind a black and white photograph published in Jacques Greilsamer and Bertrand Azéma’s book, “The World Catalog of Miniature Cars,” published in 1967.
The photograph has always fascinated me. As a child, I saw it as the very first representation of a miniature car.
I later learned that there were older models, but smaller than the Tootsietoys one. It must be said that the Ford Model T is already a legendary model, a landmark in history. The Tootsietoys miniature of the Ford Model T is almost contemporary with the car, which dates back to 1907.
As you can see, the miniature is over a century old.
The model offered has two additional advantages.
First, it is equipped with artillery-type wheels, like the original. It is therefore a very early example. This required deburring the wheels, resulting in a high manufacturing cost. Later wheels would have solid discs, easier to manufacture and generating less waste… this clearly reflects the industrial logic of profitability introduced by Ford with its Model T.
Secondly, the color, very common on the original, is unusual for this miniature. It is entirely original, with its fragile windshield and steering wheel firmly in place.

Let’s stick with convertible models with this elegant two-tone blue La Salle.
I also appreciate the very fine detailing of the separate windshield and steering wheel. Let’s not forget that it was this Graham series and its modern design that inspired European manufacturers, including Dinky Toys.
Another advantage of this Graham Tootsietoys series is its durability. The zamac from which they are made rarely shows any signs of wear…this is far from the case with Dinky Toys of the same era…and yet they sell for ridiculously low prices.

We also have, again from Tootsietoys, a beautiful two-tone Ford station wagon, quite interesting because it’s from the middle of production, equipped with black rubber wheels lacking metal hubcaps but still retaining that lovely silver trim around the grille.
I also appreciate its color. I find this intermediate version less common. Again, the very reasonable prices for miniatures in excellent original condition are an invitation to explore new horizons without breaking the bank.

My favorites are these two pre-war Märklin models on the program
I rarely have the opportunity to present them to you.
The first one is rare. It’s the Mercedes bus. While the other bus produced by the Göpingen-based company, the Magirus, is undeniably beautiful with its long hood, the Mercedes is less appealing at first glance.
However, it is rarer, and its design stems from a movement that emerged in the early 1930s.
Engineers and designers drew inspiration from aeronautical research in the field of aerodynamics to create cars, but also trucks and locomotives, with sleek, highly aesthetic shapes.
Even if this work was sometimes carried out empirically and not always effectively, it’s clear that this decade produced vehicles that would leave their mark on history thanks to the fluidity of their lines.
The Mercedes bus must be placed in this context to reveal its full beauty.

The second model has always puzzled me. It still does today. It’s the Mercedes 770, the one associated with a truly tragic period.
The first thing I noticed is that Märklin refrained from including flags, pennants, or figures inside, unlike Tip Co, for example, which also produced this car.
I’ve kept this model in a display case like a toy tied to a specific moment in history. It doesn’t do it justice. How can you showcase such an object? The car’s color is well-suited to the period. This car has long been a highlight in collections. That’s never been the case for me; it’s simply a historical document.
