….of my beginnings and the pleasure I had in listening to the stories, advice, and explanations given to me by miniature enthusiasts who were a reference at the time. These dealers, Gilles Sherpereel, Philippe Lepage, and these collectors, Benoît Colette, Jean-Bernard Sarthe, passed on some of their experience and knowledge to me. The first books devoted to the subject, those of Jean-Michel Roulet and then Bertrand Azéma, completed my training. It was by comparing their words with my own experience that I built up my knowledge. How do you recognize a piece that is off the beaten track? Some unusual color variations, such as the bronze-colored Bentley from Dinky Toys on sale this week, are easy to spot: the originality of the color immediately makes it stand out from the crowd. I particularly like one detail: the blue hood cover that enhances the ivory-colored interior. You always come across the gray one with its burgundy or red interior. Even with little experience, it is easy to guess that it is uncommon.

I could make the same comment with the yellow Ford Mustang. Its bright color makes it easy to distinguish. It contrasts with the white one.

It takes more experience to spot the Rover Series 36 Saxony Blue. There are many shades of blue ranging from navy to Saxony Blue, like the one offered this week.

This shade is at the beginning of post-war production. The discerning eye will have noticed the detail that allows it to be dated: it is equipped with smooth rims, identical to the pre-war models. The axles, however, are of a larger diameter. As you acquire them, you have to know how to question them, to ask questions. Then, little by little, you understand the subject. This is the exciting side of collecting.

It is also a story of wheel variants that characterizes the two Austin A105s on sale this week. This model first received an elegant gray dress enhanced with a red stripe applied to the sides. It was first equipped with gray painted zamac wheels, like the one offered for sale, before receiving steel wheels.

It was at this point that Liverpool decided to match the colour of the roof to that of the side flame. Logically, this model should only be equipped with the steel rims that appeared on the last examples of the first version. However, I was surprised to find a long time ago a model made with the second paint cut and still equipped with painted zamac rims. I have since seen other examples proving that there had been a series, probably the result of a stock of remaining zamac rims, that Liverpool had placed on this model. Having a sense of observation is essential for those who want to look for variants.

Another example. Seeing the Dinky Toys Humber Hawk offered this week in its rare, refined livery, green bodywork with just the side skirts highlighted in black, I remembered the discovery of a model not referenced at the time. On this example, only the roof was painted black. Remember that the classic version is green with the side skirts and roof painted black. The hardest part is identifying the anomaly. I paused for a few seconds before understanding where the variant lay.

A sense of observation and visual memory are essential qualities for anyone who wants to decline the variants of the 100 series from Solido. Bertrand Azéma’s book did not fully meet the expectations of enthusiasts at the time. The color variants are delivered in a rather confusing manner and above all they are difficult to interpret due to the absence of a color chart allowing them to be named correctly.

I thus noticed that the author sometimes used different names to describe the same color. The latter had preferred to list in detail the mold evolutions, at the risk of being off-putting for the reader. Few enthusiasts have an approach that I would describe as “philatelist” for the 100 series. The color variants are so numerous that they are enough for their pleasure.

This week, a large selection of models from this series is offered for sale, including Ford Thunderbird coupes.

Along with the Ferrari 250GT 2+2, this model is the one with the most different examples.

Its commercial career was a success. The model took advantage of its frequent presence on the assembly and painting lines, to receive almost all the colors used at the time.

We can gather 35 of them, all variants combined.

This week a rare black model is for sale. I say rare, because this color rarely comes up for sale.

Two other rare variants, dating from the beginning of production, are planned. They borrow their colors, pale blue and light bronze, from the Lancia Flaminia and Alfa Romeo 2600. These colors shared with other models in the range are part of the pleasure of collecting this series.

Recently, some enthusiasts, including myself, have added interior color variations to their research.

This week a very interesting and rare Alfa Romeo Giulietta convertible is offered with a red interior instead of ivory. This forces the enthusiast to remain vigilant and scrutinize all the models that come along…he will also have to find a place to store them!

Not all models in the 100 series were available in dozens of colors.

Also scheduled, these three cars, the Citroën Ami 6, the Panhard 24 BT and the Simca 1100, had few color variations.

Among the two Panhards offered this week, the coral version is rare.

A word about the Peugeot 403 on the menu. This model has only had a few basic colors. Four: pinkish beige, gray, blue and straw yellow. However, it remains a headache for enthusiasts who have to memorize the many shades of yellow and blue, not to mention the interior colors white, ivory and red.

This week three Mercury single-seaters are offered, which brings me back to my beginnings as a collector because it is with these racing cars that I started. Since then, I have kept an affection for this type of models.

This Turin series includes some models from the beginning of production, quite difficult to obtain.

These single-seaters almost all have wheel diameter variations that I appreciate for two reasons.

The first is aesthetic. In the display case, they form a coherent whole, representative of the single-seaters of the early fifties. They are combined with tire variants. The second is financial. The additional cost of these variants is moderate, despite the rarity of some of them. You can treat yourself, for not very much, you just have to be attentive to the details. You can open your eyes without opening your wallet.

My favorite is this rare and final version of the Citroën 2cv Wegenwacht from Dinky Toys France, equipped with a paper decoration stuck on the doors.

The keenest observers will also have spotted the aluminum rims equipped with “Dunlop” nylon tires. Without even turning it over, we can guess the type of chassis that equips it. An anodized chassis. This final version was ordered by the Dutch importer who seems to have had some success with this model in view of the many existing variants. Each variant results from a new order. I know of three different boxes…so at least three separate orders. The very low sale price at the time of the marketing of this rustic model, and the passion of the Dutch for the chevron brand explain this success. These cars crisscrossed the local roads for a long time.
