In forty years of business I have never encountered this type of packaging for Mebetoys products. I questioned several Italian enthusiasts who confirmed the great rarity. I like this type of packaging, original, which tells a story. They correspond to a period, the mid-sixties\/seventies when the marketing departments of the European toy industry reproduced what was done in the United States ten years earlier. It was the appearance of large stores that changed the situation. When in Europe sales were still organized in independent stores, America already knew supermarkets and national brands established throughout the country. Remember, in France it took a long time to see supermarkets throughout the country and even longer to find departments dedicated to toys... departments long considered seasonal. You have to read the trade journals to understand the efforts made by toy manufacturers to persuade their dealers that sales could be spread out all year round. While leafing through Jacques Greilsamer\u2019s archives, I came across Tootsietoys and Hubley dealer catalogues from the mid-fifties, with impressively large displays. The trick was to push the dealers by enticing them with substantial discounts on the number of \u201cboxes\u201d and displays."}
