Francis Pierre had explained to me that during the Paris Commune, some of the victims were buried in mass graves, the \u201cFoss\u00e9s Rouges\u201d or \u201cFosses Rouges\u201d (Red Pits).<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Francis Pierre had a strong character, and his outspokenness was disconcerting. Many people feared him, and just as many were surprised that we got along. Yet I loved working with Mr. Pierre, and I can even say that we had a wonderful rapport.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>We had a number of things in common.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>He had built two distinct collections. The first, the one closest to his heart, was devoted to scale models related to the world of public works: cranes, bulldozers, dump trucks, cement mixers\u2026 And this at all scales, from simple toys to\u2026 Sophisticated models.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>He had even created a brand dedicated to reproducing construction equipment, ATM. He didn&#8217;t hesitate to spend his vacations in the United States taking photos of oversized machines in open-pit quarries. You really grasped their size when the driver was shown at the foot of the machine in the photos. He also wrote articles for Charges-Utiles magazine under a pseudonym. A true enthusiast!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>In parallel, during the 1970s, he also started another collection related to the history of the production of miniature cars and trucks in the equivalent 1\/43 scale, whether industrial or artisanal.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>For this second branch, he set himself what I would call financial limits. In short, he seized opportunities. He bought at the price. The quality, therefore, wasn&#8217;t always up to the standards that emerged a few years later. The idea was to preserve a record, a memory of these reproductions. Miniatures. In this collection, rare, brand-new Lego trucks in their boxes sat alongside Dinky Toys wrecks, Devos trucks still in their boxes, and C-I-J conversions that had just been started and then abandoned.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>A veritable treasure trove.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>One day, he decided to cut this second branch of his passion, consumed by his primary love for construction equipment.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>He had contacted me by chance at a swap meet. He understood that we could work together, and that I was willing to take everything, the good and the not-so-good. Over a period of about three years, I made dozens of trips to Montrouge.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>He would bring boxes out of his attic, and when my car was full, I&#8217;d head back!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>I discovered many models at his place that enriched my collection, including this rare Hanomag from R.W. It&#8217;s equipped with a H\u00fcnnebeck concrete pump and seems to have been designed for that manufacturer. The attractive promotional box features a photo of the real truck in action, equipped with this concrete pump. We have to make choices.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Seeing the LMV sweeper on the agenda reminded me of a comment a Dinky Toys collector recently made to me.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>I had the opportunity to pack the two prototypes I own, which are in two different scales. He lamented the disparity in scale, particularly in British productions. He couldn&#8217;t accept that the &#8220;29&#8221; series from Liverpool, dedicated to coaches and buses, was reduced to approximately 1\/75 scale.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>He found this ridiculous compared to automobiles, which are reproduced at 1\/43 scale. I tried to explain to him that, in my view, this difference in scale didn&#8217;t detract from the collection&#8217;s appeal. It simply had to be accepted as it was.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Through Dinky Toys, we collect toys, a story, not models. It seems the French design office was more concerned with choosing the reproduction scales than the English one.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Thanks to the recovered plans, and also to the discovery of a few prototypes, we understand that the French management often questioned the &#8220;right&#8221; scale to choose. Even better, this explains the creation of these wooden models, which were placed alongside the models in the catalog at the time of their design.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>This comparison allowed the director to assess the validity of the proposed reproduction scale.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Thus, we know of at least three examples of models that were considered at two different scales: the Peugeot D3A, the Salev crane, and the LMV sweeper.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>This latest model, which we have for sale this week, is one that deserves to be appreciated for its true worth.
