I remember...
…that my parents, who were shopkeepers, were sometimes approached by local charities.
It often involved donating an item that could be given as a gift or prize. I particularly remember an event at the Salle Saint-Nicolas in Compiègne.
The French Red Cross had organized a fundraising event. There were various stands, but I remember one table filled with Politoys miniatures in their bubble wrap boxes.
The French Red Cross has a long history with toy manufacturers.
We remember the Citroën ID19 from the C-I-J (Centre International de la Jeunesse – International Youth Center) with the small message printed on the box indicating that part of the miniature’s value was donated to the French Red Cross.
Previously, there had been an ambulance resembling a Renault Gallion, specially made for this organization by a company in the “Plastics Valley” (Jura region) and delivered in a transparent case.
This model was only distributed at charity events. Majorette also released a Citroën DS21 station wagon ambulance in the colors of the Red Cross.
Regarding the campaign conducted by the French Red Cross and Politoys, I recently had the pleasure of finding a Politoys model in a collection with a sticker on the transparent lid of the box referring to the campaign. This particular model didn’t include an ambulance… but rather the entire range from the early 1970s, consisting mainly of sports and racing cars.
The models were packaged in transparent boxes on a yellow plastic base. I imagine there was a contract between Politoys and the French Red Cross.
On that day, my father bought me a long-wheelbase 1970 Alfa Romeo 33.
These Politoys models were very poorly distributed in my region, and I wasn’t familiar with them. One detail stood out to me.
Even today, when I come across this type of product, I think back to it. It’s the presence of a miniature disassembly key in a dedicated compartment on the base. The child I was was captivated by this accessory.
I’d forgotten that the miniature itself was rather ordinary. The idea of a miniature assembly tool was brilliant.
It was common to both of the Milanese company’s scale ranges: 1/43 and 1/24…
I thought about it again when I saw the few Politoys models for sale this week.

These models were also supposed to be there during the sale described above. Some will shrug. The standard of engraving and execution isn’t that of Solido models of the time, of course. You just have to understand these objects within their historical context. That’s how I appreciate them.
If you’re looking for a perfect Lamborghini Urraco, go for the Mebetoys or, even better, a “Chinese” production. Don’t take this as a criticism of Asian products. They are often extraordinary in their craftsmanship.
But it’s something else entirely. They’re no longer “toys” like these Politoys, which have a soul. The colors are somewhat unrealistic; they transport us back to that era.
And finding them with their boxes and keys is far from easy. Moreover, the prices are affordable. I took advantage of buying a collection to keep a set of Politoys from that period.
We also have a De Tomaso Pantera and an Alfa Romeo Iguana for sale. Three other models from the “export” series are also available.

Although this is the budget range, the Italians have paid attention to the packaging. I appreciate the drawing of the gas station and the silhouette of the attendant on the cardboard insert.
How many children have chosen a model from this range after seeing the drawing? There are very few plastic parts on the models in this range, which, as you can see from today’s lineup, goes from the prototype (Jaguar Piranha) to the exceptional model (Lamborghini Marzal), including popular cars (Volkswagen Variant).
This is perhaps one of the best reproductions of this station wagon.
If you remain a die-hard Mebetoys fan, and I understand why, we have a few of them, including an original and rare BMW 2000CS Alpina.
Mebetoys has dared to equip this beautiful coupe with a luggage rack on which rests a spare tire. We also have the “classic” version.

The model offered is interesting because of its color and especially its box design. It’s Mebetoys’ answer to Politoys when the latter launched its first plastic boxes, described above.
The “912” version is a success, especially in this believable color, which was that of the factory cars entered in rallies at the time.
Let’s finish with a classic, the Fiat 500L. This miniature perfectly encapsulates Mebetoys’ expertise. A great success. This is the first version with rhinestone headlights. This model remained in the catalog for a very long time.

many opinions
At the events I attend, I gather collectors’ opinions on the future of collecting.
Dinky Toys enthusiasts have shared an observation with me: a scarcity of models from the 24 series and contemporary utility vehicles in excellent condition are now available for sale. This is quite logical. Selling prices have fallen. Sellers must therefore be careful about their purchase price while maintaining the quality standard of the products they acquire.
It’s a difficult equation to solve. A classic product, even a superb one like this Delahaye large-scale programmed truck, can only be sold at a reasonable price likely to attract new buyers, because all the long-term collectors already own this item.
We collectors have all been surprised, looking at our display cases, by the condition of classic models bought 20 or 30 years ago. Take your Delahaye 32D in hand and check its condition…the price of the one offered is an invitation to acquire it.

You can also acquire Mr. Gougeon’s books and multiply the variations almost infinitely. For my part, I kept five. Everyone sets the bar as they wish. I thought of the enthusiasts described above when I saw these three beautiful Series 24s from the golden age up for sale: two Simca 8 Sports and a 1949 Ford Vedette.

These three miniatures, dating from the very early 1950s, have never had individual cases. I have a soft spot for this period, when, despite the still very real difficulties, Bobigny excelled. It took audacity to produce this Simca 8 with its thin windshield, molded as part of the body. There must have been some rejects on the assembly line. Meccano quickly and elegantly reinforced the windshield.
We have both versions. The very first one, with a subtle detail: raw zamac wheels. The consequences of the war and rationing were still being felt in 1950. They would soon be chromed.
This very fragile model rarely comes up for sale in this condition. Be aware that there are many shades of gray…you could fill a box of six with different shades…I did.

The other model is from the very end of production.
Its reinforced windshield and elegant ivory and red color combination are clues to its late production.
The model has a black marbled chassis. On the final models, it received a glossy black finish.
The third model is a staple of the 24 series: the 1949 Ford Vedette. The grille detailing and engraving are superb. Meccano has perfectly captured the car’s lines. The miniature is impressive.
These three cars share the common trait of being in excellent condition.

an endearing company
C-I-J is an endearing company. The two sets offered this week reflect its ethos.
Over time, its distinctive, almost naive, approach to toy design becomes apparent. This is a legacy of C-I-J’s long history of combining different materials and assembling them tastefully.
The “Public Works” set, with its beautiful illustration, wasn’t a great success. The price didn’t match the profile of the customers in the stores where it was sold, primarily in rural areas. The desire to do things well is evident. Even though the cardboard isn’t very thick, the set is attractive. The first thing that impresses is the set of cut-out accessories (signs, barriers, etc.) that serve as a base. The vibrant colors are also an invitation to play. The sheet metal hopper is a testament to the expertise of the Briare-based company, which had nothing to envy in terms of folding and design compared to contemporary German firms. It is robust and functional.
The Saviem comes with an accessory that distinguishes it from the version delivered in an individual case: a sheet metal cap matching the tipper body. It’s a splendid set that deserves to be appreciated for its true value.

The assembly line set is charming.
To my knowledge, C-I-J is the only toy manufacturer to have dared to offer this! What a beautiful illustration on the box lid!
This type of illustration, fashionable in the mid-sixties, reminds me of a series of books illustrated by Alain Grée and published by Casterman, “Achille et Bergamote.” These books were a wonderful gateway to knowledge, and their illustrations have stayed with me for life.
Perhaps the idea of letting the child paint the car themselves was excessive! Especially considering the quality of the brush included in the set! I’ve never actually come across a properly finished example.
On the other hand, I remember very well, at the end of the seventies, during one of the first editions of the Brussels toy fair at the Woluwe Shopping Center, the pile of unsold items on the table of a Belgian collector. One last detail connects this model to the first article.
A small accessory that could trigger a purchase for a child: the presence of a miniature metal key like the one parents used to start the car. An accessory full of charm.

My favorite is the three splendid trucks from Dinky Toys Liverpool.
While scrolling through the models for sale, I came to the conclusion that I placed this Foden and these two Guy van trucks at the top of my favorite models of the week.

And this is despite the few beautiful Cherryca Phenix models I’ve planned, the splendid Bedford from Brimtoys, and even the Scania Tekno. I remain deeply attached to these magnificent British trucks. Even today, at swap meets, I love opening the boxes and seeing the color combinations inside. These models are the cornerstones of my collection.

This is still what connects me to my father, who adored these models and, along with the Tekno, placed them at the very top of his priorities.
Prices have dropped considerably, which is yet another reason for those who couldn’t afford them a few years ago to finally take the plunge.
